Berneice M. Lackey
Olean, NY--Berneice M. Lackey, formerly of N. 15th St. and recently of Eden Heights, died Saturday (March 22, 2008) in the Absolut Care of Allegany.
Born June 26, 1918 in Guys Mills, PA she was the daughter of Charles and Mable Walters Byham. On February 11, 1939 in Meadville, PA she married Carl D. Lackey who predeceased her December 28, 1982.
Mrs. Lackey formerly resided in Pennsylvania before moving to this area in 1953. She worked with her husband at the former Powell and Lackey General Store in Obi and later for the former Cathedral Kitchens Co. in Cuba. She most recently sold real estate for Pepper and Crandall Real Estate Co. in Olean prior to her retirement.
She was a truly dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Olean. She also was a member of the Cattaraugus County Bird Club and the Portville Garden Club for many years. In her desire to help grant wished to chronically and terminally ill children in the area she created the Carl D. Lackey Foundation for Children in memory of her husband. She was a social person who enjoyed walking and card playing.
Surviving are 2 children Stephen C. Lackey of Canastota and Kathy (Norm) Malick of Hinsdale; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother Frank (Nancy) Byham of Meadville, PA and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by 1 brother Wayne Byham and 1 sister Mary Powell.
There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held on Friday (March 28, 2008) at 11am at the First Baptist Church in Olean. Rev. Dan !McDowell, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville. Memorials if desired may be made to the First Baptist Church 133 S. Union Street, Olean NY.
