Father James F. Hynes, OFM
Father James F. Hynes, OFM, 57 years of age, a professed Franciscan Friar for 32 years and a priest for 28 years, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 1, 2008, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., as the result of a heart attack.
Fr. Hynes was born on July 31, 1951, in Buffalo, N.Y, the youngest child of the late Thomas and Gertrude Flood Hyne. He graduated in 1969 from Baker-Victory High School in Lackawanna, N.Y. He then attended Villa Maria College in Buffalo for one year and then Rosary Hill College (now Daemen College) in Snyder, N.Y.
Fr. Hynes entered the pre-novitiate program of Holy Name Province of the Franciscan Friars in 1974, completing his undergraduate education at St. John’s University in New York. He was received into the Franciscan Order at St. Bonaventure University, Saint Bonaventure, N.Y., on June 25, 1975, by Fr. Finian Kerwin, OFM. On June 12, 1976, he professed first vows at St. Francis Friary, Brookline, Mass., before Fr. Charles Finnegan, OFM.
Fr. Hynes is survived by his brothers, Edmund of Depew, N.Y., and John of Buffalo, N.Y., and sister, Patricia Browne, and six nephews and nieces and three great nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in Hartford. A graveside committal service will be held on Saturday, (November 8, 2008) at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany.
