Leo Paul !McGuire
OLEAN - Leo Paul (Sandy) !McGuire of 201 York Street died Monday November 18, 2002 at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, PA. Born in Sankertown, Cambria County, PA on December 22, 1920 he was the son of Charles H. and Sue A. (Conrad) !McGuire. This May, he celebrated 53 years of marriage to Frances Patricia !McCann whom he wed in Cresson, PA on May 14th, 1949.
Mr. !McGuire told his family to 'trust in God and in each other." He cherished time with family, both immediate and extended.
He was an avid reader who sought to know the truth and to live by it. He believed individuals make a difference and personally influenced the lives of many through quiet service and committed friendship. His quick wit delighted all who knew him.
A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of St Mary of the Angels Church.
He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and gardening.
Mr. !McGuire served his country in both World War II and Korea. During World War II, he participated in numerous campaigns in the European theatre including the D Day invasion of Normandy.
In 1949 he graduated from Penn State with a BS in electrical engineering. Subsequently, he worked in the gas turbine department at Dresser Clark from 1956 to 1962, Air Products and Ingersoll Rand from 1962 to 1969, returning to Dresser Clark as Manager of the Controls Engineering Department until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement, he did consulting work for Dresser Rand.
Mr. !McGuire belonged to the Dresser Office Retirees, the St Bonaventure Golf Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; four children: Blanche !McGuire of Pittsburgh, Maureen (and Ray) Ford of Missoula, MT, Charles !McGuire of Iowa City, IA, Paul (and Suzanne) !McGuire of Lewisburg; and eight grandchildren. He has six surviving brothers and sisters: Robert (and Lucille) !McGuire of Santa Maria, California, Peggy Sutton of Chest Springs, PA; Paul (and Donna) !McGuire of Tucson, AZ; Lois (and Jack) Hall of Nokomis, IL and Hilda Hahn and Bernice (and Gene) Illig both of Pittsburgh. Another brother, Charles B. !McGuire, preceded him in death during World War II.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 West State Street, Olean from 2 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 9 PM. Rosary and wake prayers will begin at 8:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary of the Angels Church on Thursday, November 21st, at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Evangelical Home Health Services/Hospice in Lewisburg, the Genesis House in Olean or to a charity of the donor's choice.
