Obituary of Martha I. Matthews

Martha I. Matthews Olean, NY—Martha I. Matthews of Olean died Thursday (January 11, 2007) in The Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Olean where she had resided for the past three years. Born January 8, 1917 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of George and Lola Root Weatherell. In 1937 she married Joseph E. Matthews who predeceased her in 1950. Mrs. Matthews was a lifelong resident of Olean and was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. She had worked in the shoe department at the former Montgomery Ward Co. She then worked for the Hannifan Shoe Store for many years and also for The Naturalizer Shoe Store in the Olean Center Mall until her retirement in 1989. Surviving are a son Joseph E. Matthews, Jr., of Olean; a daughter Judith C. (Robert) Bell of Olean; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; 1 brother James Weatherell of Cuba; 3 sisters Anne Judge of Corry, PA, Nina !McMullen of Olean and Alice Moore of Allegany and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son Robert S. Matthews; 2 brothers John Weatherell and Ronald Weatherell and a sister Roberta Ubelhear. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean at the convenience of the family.
