Joseph W. Giardini, Sr.
“Poppy Joe”
Allegany, NY—Joseph W. Giardini, Sr. of the N. Nine Mile Rd. who had recently resided at the home of his daughter in Salamanca passed away Sunday (September 9, 2007) at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY due to complications after surgeries.
Born February 7, 1929 in S. Vandalia, NY he was the son of Anthony and Virginia Levis Giardini. On August 2, 1952 at the First Presbyterian Church in Olean he married Mary Jane Crowner who predeceased him August 25, 1987.
Mr. Giardini had earlier worked in the construction business prior to forming a scrap dealership in Allegany which he operated for over forty five years. He enjoyed working, driving, visiting with friends and spending time at a Casino. He loved to reminisce about the “good ole days”.
Surviving are 2 daughters Sharon (Charles) Talbot of Salamanca and Nancy Jo (Harold “Butch” Clayton) Giardini of Allegany; 1 son Joseph W. (Sheila Morgan) Giardini, Jr. of Olean; 7 grandchildren David (Betsy) Talbot, Damond (Magalys) Talbot, Kari Clayton, John (Kaity) Clayton, Alison Giardini, Ben Giardini and Marielle Giardini; 6 great grandchildren; 1 brother Paul (Louise)Giardini of Bradford, PA; 2 sisters Mary (Richard) Deibler and Margaret Horning, both of Olean; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Linda (Alan) Woodworth and family of Wellsville and close family friends of over 50 years Mike and Babe Darrow of Allegany
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 4 brothers Gillio “Deke” Giardini, John Giardini, Charles Giardini and Mayo Giardini; 3 sisters Anastasia Giardini, Louise Wilson, Joanne Argento and several siblings at birth.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Wednesday (September 12, 2007) from 4 until 7:30pm at which time funeral services will be held. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to “Home Town Heroes”, c/o Allegany American Legion Rte 417 Allegany, NY 14706.
