William M. “Red” Rickey “baseball enthusiast”
Olean, NY--William M. “Red” Rickey, formerly of W. Henley St. died Friday (October 5, 2007) in the Bradford Manor in Bradford, PA after a long illness.
Born December 13, 1926 in Olean, NY he was the son of William J. and Florence Paventa Rickey.
Mr. Rickey was a longtime Olean resident who attended school in Olean and enlisted in the US Army where he served during WWII. He was later employed by the former Thatcher Glass Plant, then the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. He later worked for Mazza Roofing Co. and then for Peterson Roofing Co. He was a handyman who enjoyed doing odd jobs for others as well as repairing bicycles for children. He also enjoyed woodworking and berry picking.
He was a former member of the Olean American Legion.
Surviving are a sister June (Willard) Falk of Olean; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law Janice Rickey and a brother-in-law Larry Sawdey.
He was predeceased by 3 brothers Frederick Rickey, Frank Rickey, Stanley Rickey, August Rickey and Arnold Rickey and 3 sisters Beatrice Hall, Helen Baker and Della Sawdey.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 1-4pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (October 8, 2007) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Frank Hayman, pastor of the Allegany Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
