John W. Barber, Sr.
“Devoted Husband, Father and Real Cool Dad”
Hinsdale, NY-- John W. Barber, Sr. of 3874 Main St. died peacefully Thursday (February 9, 2006) at his residence.
Born February 6, 1931 in Herkimer, NY he was the son of William Earl and Rose Elizabeth Coffen Barber. On May 28, 1953 in Olean, NY he married Roberta C. Deibler who predeceased him February 3, 1995. In January 1992 the couple renewed their vows at St. Helen’s Church in Hinsdale.
Mr. Barber was a graduate of Bradford High School and was a veteran of the Korean War having served two enlistments with the US Navy. He was a self employed electrician for his whole career and most recently retired from St. Bonaventure University, first in electrical maintenance and later for Security Services.
He was a member of St. Helen’s Church in Hinsdale. He was also a life member of the Hinsdale American Legion and the Hinsdale Fire Department. He was a Buffalo Bills fan and he enjoyed water skiing, singing with the Barbershoppers and playing horseshoes. Most of all he loved being able to do things for his family.
Surviving are 6 children Pamela Barber Gould of Olean, Joni Barber Truman of Olean, Nancy (Terry) Alderman of Hinsdale, John W. Barber, Jr. of Olean, Michelle Barber Robbins of Olean and Barbara Barber Carapellatti of Bradford, NY; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 sister Lois (Gerry) Gustafson of Bradford, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 2 brothers Harold Barber and Stanley Barber and 1 sister Charlotte Barber.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean tonight from 7-9pm and Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday (February 13, 2006) at 11:00am at St. Helen’s Church, Hinsdale. Fr. Barry Allaire, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Hinsdale Fire Department.
