Olean, NY—Robert G. “Stub” Howden of 101 N. 20th St. died unexpectedly Friday (August 4, 2006) in his home.
Born April 13, 1926 in Olean he was the son of L. Gordon and Bernice Ford Howden. On August 9, 1946 in Olean he married Catherine Seitz, who survives.
Mr. Howden attended Olean schools and was a lifelong resident of Olean. Along with his father he owned and operated the former L. G. Howden and Son Sporting Goods store in Olean and he was also a promotional manager for the former Ski Wing in Allegany.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and also the Allegany American Legion. He was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed gardening.
Surviving besides his wife are 1 son Mark (Kathleen) Howden of Olean; 4 daughters Christine (Dr. James) Valenza of Naples, FL, Catherine T. (Daniel) !DenBleyker of Thorton, CO, Caroline (Robert) Ash of Olean and Ann (James) Thompson of Thornton, CO; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter Mary E. Spears in 2001 and a sister Marguerite Soplop in 1999.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 6-8pm only. Funeral services will be held Monday (August 7, 2006) at 10:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church, will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
