“The Iris Lady”
Olean, NY—Helen E. Raines, of 2955 W. Fall Rd. died Wednesday (December 20, 2006) at The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Machias where she had resided for the past year and a half.
Born May 26, 1916 in Baltimore, Maryland she was the daughter of Ludwig and Ottlie Von Silbert Winters. On September 9, 1935 she married Kenneth W. Raines who predeceased her January 27, 1999.
Mrs. Raines had resided in Olean for the past 66 years and was known to her family and friends as “The Iris Lady”. Her passion was maintaining beautiful flower gardens at her home and she was a member of the NYS Iris Society.
Surviving are 1 daughter Diane (Geoffrey) Ward of Manhattan, NY; 1 son Calvin (Deborah) Raines of Olean; 4 grandchildren Garrett Ward, Nathan Ward, Kelly Ward, Craig Raines and a niece.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by 2 infant sons, 1 brother Ludwig Christian Winters and 1 sister Ottlie Sipes.
At Mrs. Raines’ request, there will be no scheduled visitation or funeral service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Olean Public Library or to the NYS Iris Society PO Box 28 Cedar Hill, MO 63016-0028.
