Obituary of Loraine A. Straight

Loraine A. Straight "loving mother, community volunteer" Olean, NY-- Loraine A. Straight of 350 Front St. died Tuesday (January 11, 2005) in the Olean General Hospital. Born April 15, 1921 in Bolivar, NY she was the daughter of Phill and Irma Maxson Appleby. On July 16, 1940 in Eldred, PA she married Kenneth Merle Straight who predeceased her January 10, 1947. Mrs. Straight was a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and worked for !McGraw Edison Co., now Cooper Power Systems, in Olean for over 30 years, retiring in 1983. She attended Christ United Methodist Church in Olean and had been very active as a volunteer for the former St. Francis Hospital as well as a day captain for Meals on Wheels through the RSVP program. She was a former Lady Elk in Olean and was a former member of the Olean Senior League. She also served as an ombudsman for the former Cattaraugus County Nursing Home (now The Pines) in Olean. Surviving are two sons Steven "Jim" (Anne) Straight of Olean and Clayton John Straight; 2 daughters Katherine (James) Martel of Rochester and Merleyn Kay Straight of Rogue River, OR; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 sister Alice Abrams of Tucson, AZ and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a stepmother Minerva Fagan; a son Arthur Straight in April 1986; a granddaughter Stephanie Martel; 2 brothers Arthur A. Appleby and Lawrence P. Appleby and 1 sister Phyllis Ford. Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Saturday (January 15, 2005) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. John Bartz, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, NY. Memorials, if desired, may be made to The Rehabilitation Center 1439 Buffalo St. Olean, NY or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
