Thomas B. Cooney, Jr.

Allegany, NY– Thomas B. Cooney, Jr. of 1861 Willard St. died peacefully at home Sunday (January 23, 2005), surrounded by his devoted family.
Born November 21, 1926 in Salamanca, NY he was the son of Thomas B. And Helen Kelly Cooney, Sr. On August 5, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca he married Theresa L. Poydock who predeceased him January 16, 2003.
Mr. Cooney was a veteran of WWII, having served with the US Navy aboard submarines in the Asian Pacific. He later attended St. Bonaventure University. He had been employed for 46 years as a tool and die maker for Clark Brothers in Olean prior to his retirement in 1993. He also worked for Keystone Tool and Die Co. in Westons Mills.
A resident of Willard Street since 1950, Mr. Cooney was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Allegany American Legion, and recently the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a member of the former Olean Racquet Club which in recent years was the St. Bonaventure University Fitness Center. He enjoyed exercising there for the past twenty years. He was a loyal St. Bonaventure University basketball fan and belonged to the Bonaventure Booster Club.
Surviving are his five children Thomas Michael (Lorrie) Cooney of Spring, TX, Kathleen C. (Frank) Dougherty of Rochester, NY, Anne L. Cooney of Allegany, Mary H. (David) Reynolds of Little Valley and James P. (Cathy) Cooney of Henderson, NV; 12 grandchildren Jeffrey Cooney, Jill (Zach Teague) Cooney, Dr. Katie Dougherty, Matt Dougherty, Nate (Adrienne !D’Angelo) Dougherty, Molly Dougherty, Andrew Reynolds, Brett Reynolds, Katie Reynolds, Kevin Cooney, Brian Cooney, Julie Cooney and Erica Manion and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Barbara (Gerald) Fordham of Salamanca and a brother-in-law Robert Poydock of Perry, NY.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by one brother and two sisters including Marie Fitzgerald.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday (January 27, 2005) beginning with a prayer service at 10:30am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in St. Bonaventure Church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Homecare and Hospice 1225 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760.
