Evelyn J. Rose
Olean, NY--Evelyn J. Rose of 1506 W. Henley St. died Sunday (February 27, 2005) in the Olean General Hospital after a short illness.
Born July 15, 1918 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of George E. and Rosetta Hellwege Rose, Sr.
Miss Rose was a resident of Olean most of her life and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Olean where she served as an ordained deacon. She also taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was active in its Women’s Association. Along with her sister she co-authored the church cookbook. For years she enjoyed working on the Easter morning breakfast and serving every men’s club breakfast and many other community meals. She was active in the YMCA for many years and she was always caring for others, especially her mother in her later years. She was generous in her sponsorship of a Central American child, giving him an opportunity to live in this country for a year. She was also a benevolent sponsor for Chinese and Russian refugees, helping them to return to their homeland. Along with her sister she was a former member of the Silver Cross Circle of the International Order of King’s Daughters and Sons and was a charter member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.
Surviving are a beloved sister Lillian R. Rose with whom she resided; a nephew Jeffrey M. Rose of Toronto, Canada, a niece Cherie L. Whitcher of Allegany and several cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother George E. Rose, Jr.
Visitation will be private. Friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held Thursday (March 3, 2005) at 2:00pm in the First Presbyterian Church in Olean. Rev. Gary Larson, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dr. Anthony L. Evans. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the First Presbyterian Church 212 Laurens St. Olean or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
