Olean, NY--Celia M. Jermy of 129 S. 26th St. died Tuesday (March 8, 2005) in The Waters of Allegany after a short illness.
Born January 28, 1931 in Shinglehouse, PA she was the daughter of Burdette and Hannah Greeley Sherwood. On December 2, 1950 in Olean she married Loren Jermy who predeceased her February 21, 1992.
Mrs. Jermy was a 1948 graduate of Olean High School and had resided in Olean all of her life. She worked at the Olean City School District for 26 years, first as a teacher assistant, and later in the medical records office prior to her retirement in 1989.
She was a devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church and served as president of the United Methodist Women for twelve years. She was also active on various committees including church dinner preparations and choir readiness. At the United Methodist Women district level she served as its president and was currently an officer who served as the spiritual growth chairperson, served as an "at large" member to the annual conference and served as a member of the committee of ordained ministry.
Mrs. Jermy was a thoughtful person who loved to help other people and she volunteered as a member of the Olean General Hospital Auxiliary, for the Regina Quick Fine Arts Center, Interfaith Caregivers and the former Welcome Wagon. Her personal interests included reading, playing cards and collecting Pepsi memorabilia.
Surviving are 1 daughter Charlotte (Stan Wojciechowski) Jermy of Randolph, OH; 2 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; 1 brother Ronald (Lela) Sherwood of Jacksonville, NC; 2 nephews, 1 great niece and a sister-in-law Alta Lauer of New Jersey.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a brother Charles Sherwood.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Thursday from 6-9pm. Visitation will continue at Christ United Methodist Church on Friday (March 11, 2005) from 10:00am until time of services at 11:00am. Rev. John Bartz, pastor, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Ron Isaman, D.S. of Mountain View District, Rev. Paul Cauvel, minister of visitation and Rev. Beth Kottemann of the United Methodist Church of Hornell. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or to the Olean Public Library.
