Susan Marion Fortuna “Retired Nurse” Allegany, NY-- Susan Marion Fortuna of 6 N. First St., a recent resident of The Waters of Houghton, died peacefully Saturday (October 22, 2005) in the presence of her daughters after a brief illness. Born March 11, 1917 in Chicago, IL she was the daughter of James and Sarah !McManoman Nolan. On October 25, 1941 in Salamanca, NY she married Francis B. “Frank” Fortuna who predeceased her July 11, 1997. Mrs. Fortuna was a 1933 graduate of Salamanca High School and also of Our Lady of Victory School of Nursing in Buffalo. She received nursing training at Father Baker’s Orphanage in Buffalo prior to moving to Allegany. She then worked as an infant nurse at the former St. Francis Hospital until 1948 at which time she was employed as a night shift supervisor for the Allegany Nursing Home for six years. After retirement she was active with the LPN Association. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and was a 50 year member and former president of Catholic Daughters of America. She served as a past president of the Allegany Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. For over 32 years she enjoyed a summer residence at Rushford Lake. She enjoyed going out to dinner and in her later years she enjoyed watching game shows and reruns of older movies on television. Surviving are a daughter !LyndaSue Fortuna of Allegany, her “other daughter” Joan Bish of Olean; a nephew Roy (Louise) Raker of Dallas, TX; a nephew James E. (Cheryl) Nolan and family of Hilton, NY; a niece Jeannette Blumenthal of Ft. Lee, VA; a great niece Tara Burdick of Victor, NY; 3 sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews in the Allegany area. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by 2 brothers James Nolan of Victor and John Nolan of Salamanca. At Mrs. Fortuna’s request, a private Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Allegany Fire Department, the Olean Lion’s Club or to the American Red Cross. Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
