George J. Butts “Loving husband of 70 years” Olean, NY-- George J. Butts, a resident of Olean since 1998, died Monday (December 19, 2005) at St. Joseph’s Manor, Olean where he had resided for the past 1 ½ years. Born August 9, 1909 in Rochester, NY he was the son of George A. and Helen Gersner Butts. On August 8, 1935 at St. Andrew’s Church in Rochester, NY he married Mildred C. Cartenuto who survives. Mr. Butts was raised in Rochester where he began working in the family printing business. He later became owner of Lake View Printing Co., retiring after 46 years in the business. He and his wife retired to Hollywood, FL for 25 years prior to moving to Aspen Tower in Olean in 1998. He was a longtime member of St. Andrew’s Church and served as past president of the Holy Name Society of the church. He was very active in many church and community activities and was a member of St. George’s Benevolent Society, the Rochester Credit Union, the printer’s trade union and he was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Mr. Butts had a beautiful singing voice and he recently enjoyed entertaining fellow nursing home residents. He also enjoyed reading, and will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his gifted spirit. Until his early 90’s he and his wife lived independently and they celebrated 70 years of marriage this year. Surviving are 1 daughter M. Jeanne (Rob) Walk of Cuba; 2 grandchildren Christopher Walk and Elizabeth Walk; 1 great grandson Alexander Walk-Pircio; 2 sisters Sister M. Bernard, RSM of Rochester and Marie Trott of Rochester; 1 brother Edward (Winnie) Butts of FL and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Marjorie Marie Butts in 1992. There will be no visitation. A family memorial is being planned for a future date. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Cuba Library 39 E. Main St. Cuba, NY 14727. Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
