BERNARD C. KAYES, SR. "Father, grandfather, patriot and friend" Olean, NY-- Bernard C. Kayes, Sr. of 124 N. 5th St. died Friday (October 10, 2003) in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo, NY after a brief illness. Born January 24, 1918 in Olean, NY he was the son of James and Eleanor Kuhn Kayes. On July 4, 1947 at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean, NY he married Lucille A. Lippert who predeceased him October 28, 2001. Mr. Kayes was a lifelong resident of Olean and was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII from 1942 until 1946, including the Battle of the Bulge. He achieved the rank of Sgt. T-4 and his decorations included the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the EAME Service Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Kayes had been employed for Dresser Clark Co. for 31 years prior to his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and of the United Steelworkers Union Local #4601. Surviving are 4 sons Bernard (Diana) Kayes, Jr. of Buffalo and Michael (Katherine) Kayes, James (Lisa) Kayes and Richard !VanNess, all of Olean; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Vincent Kayes and Fred (Evelyn) Kayes, both of Olean and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 4 brothers Richard Kayes, Patrick Kayes, Joseph Kayes and James Kayes and 2 sisters Helen Seager and Mary Batesky. Friends will be received on Saturday from 7-9pm and Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Monday (October 13, 2003) beginning with a prayer service at 9:00am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY 1284 French Rd. Depew, NY 14043.
