CHARLES JAMES YOUNG "Former Olean Fire Chief" OLEAN – Charles James Young a resident of the Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Olean Campus died Saturday January 17, 2004 at the Olean General Hospital. Born in Olean on July 28, 1923 he was a son of Charles O. and Dolores Bischalaney Young. Mr. Young was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1940. He served in the US Air Force during from 1942 through 1947. Following the war, he was employed for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He began his employment as a fireman for the City of Olean Fire Department in 1950. In 1959 he was appointed as Lieutenant and in 1964 he was appointed as Captain. From 1972 until his retirement in 1987 he served as Fire Chief. He was a member of the New York State Fire Chief's Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, Cattaraugus County Fire Chiefs Association, He served for several years as a member of the Cattaraugus County Fire Advisory Board and Emergency Medical Services Council. The Olean Exchange Club honored him as Fireman of the year in 1987. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, a lifetime member of the St. Stephen's Club, a social member of the Pulaski club, a member of the Olean American Legion, Olean V.F.W., Friends of Good Music, Friends of the Library, Olean Community Theater, the Theater Workshop, and served on the board of directors for the American Red Cross. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He is survived by one son, Charles W. (Cathy) Young of Olean; two grandchildren, Dustin C. Young and Nathaniel A. Young both of Olean; one brother, Leon "Butch" (Rita) Young of Olean; one sister, Dolores (Richard) Newhouse of Huffman, TX; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three brothers, Francis "Bunky" Young, Robert Young and Larry Young; and one sister, Margaret Parker. Friends will be received on Tuesday January 20, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 West State Rd., Olean. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday January 21, 2004 at St. Joseph's Maronite Church. Fr. Joseph Akiki, Administrator, will be celebrant. Memorials may be made to the Olean Permanent Firefighters Association, 542 North Union Street, Olean, NY 14760.
