Obituary of Joseph A. Chapus

Joseph A. Chapus Olean, NY Joseph A. Chapus, 70, of 618 Homer St., passed away Sunday (July 31, 2022) at the Olean General Hospital after a short illness. Born September 21, 1951 in Olean, he was the son of Joseph A. and Ethel I. Halcomb Chapus, Sr. Joseph served in the US Army during the Vietnam War from 1971 until his honorable discharge in 1974. He then worked as an employee of the Cattaraugus County Highway Department until his retirement. As a young boy, he excelled as a Little League baseball player and always enjoyed watching sports. He also liked country music. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and gardening. He enjoyed his pets over the years and especially liked socializing with his friends. He is survived by a sister Barbara (John) Lentz of Olean; a brother Mark (Connie) Chapus of Olean; 2 nieces Nicol Stier-Dowdell and her children Morgan and Connor and Kim Johnsen and her daughter Jennifer, and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother George Chapus on June 9, 2018. The family welcomes friends to a memorial visitation on Friday (August 5, 2022) from 11am until 1pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A memorial service will begin at 1pm in the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Michael Reyes, OFM. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
