Obituary of Joseph J. Sobey

Allegany, NY Joseph J. Sobey of Sheldon Drive, was called home to his loving Savior on Friday (October 22, 2021) at the age of 89. Born May 8, 1932, in Mercer County, PA, he was the youngest of 10 children born to John and Pauline Stephney Sobey. On May 16, 1958, in Cortland, NY, he married Jane Williams who predeceased him on February 6, 2003. On October 7, 2006, he married Kathleen E. Steiner who survives. Joseph was a 1950 graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage, PA. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Army where he served in Korea, SCARWAF Engineer Unit, 840th Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He continued his education and graduated from Youngstown (OH) University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After his marriage to Jane, he resided in Niagara Falls before moving to Buffalo, where he was the manager of the former Robert Hall until going to work for Allstate Insurance. He quickly rose to the top of his field, winning numerous awards for his success in sales. Joseph and his family moved from Buffalo to Allegany in 1969, where he continued his long, successful career until retiring in 1997. He was a member of Allegany Baptist Church and Allegany Sixty-Plus. He was proud to have been a Boy Scout. Joseph was a faith-filled man who loved the Lord. He loved his family immensely, was very proud of them, and cherished the time he spent with them. He had a passion for cars and loved to drive. He was a people person and was never at a loss for words. He was hard-working and generous. He enjoyed the outdoors and liked working in his flower gardens. He leaves behind his loving wife Kathleen; a daughter Sandra (Christopher) Miller of Allegany; 3 grandsons Dr. Christopher (Dr. Jennifer) Miller of Ithaca, Jeremy (Lauren) Miller of Las Vegas, NV, and Troy (Christie) Miller of Olean; 2 great granddaughters Adelaide and Anneliese Miller; 2 stepsons Jefrey (Dr. Shomita) Steiner of Olean and Dr. Jonathan (Meg) Steiner of Newfane; 3 step grandchildren Jonah, Evelyn and Lillian Steiner and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Jane, he was predeceased by 5 sisters Helen Senoyuit, Mary Carsone, Anna Sobey, Pauline DiOrio, and Julia Thompson and 4 brothers Andrew Sobey, John Sobey, George Sobey and Charles Sobey. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 4-7 pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. in Olean. Visitation will continue Friday (Oct. 29, 2021) at Allegany Baptist Church on Maple Ave. in Allegany from 10 am to 11 am. A funeral service will begin at 11 am in the church. Rev. Frank Hayman, former pastor of the church and a family friend, will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will be at the Allegany Cemetery.
