"loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother"
Allegany, NY-- Mary E. Cooley, a longtime resident of the Five Mile Rd. died Monday (October 18, 2004) in The Pines Health Care Center, Machias, NY after a long illness. Born September 9, 1920 in Cuba, NY she was the daughter of John and Antoinette Rhow.
Mrs. Cooley was a graduate of Cuba High School. From 1940 until 1950 along with her husband she owned and operated several restaurants including the Capital Hill Restaurant in Olean. She later worked at the Ho-Sta-Geh Restaurant and the former Castle Restaurant for several years until her retirement.
She was a skilled seamstress and made patchwork quilts for all of her family and she enjoyed making craft items. She loved to garden, watch sports on television, especially baseball games and NY Jet’s football games and she loved to entertain her family.
Surviving are two sons Dr. Robert (Susan) Cooley of Pittsburgh, PA and Kenneth (Barbara) Cooley of Blue Bell, PA; two daughters Diane (John) Little of Portville and Martha Gagliardi of Ft. Myers, FL; 11 grandchildren Kim (Stew) Loper of Portville, Kris (Rich) Curtin of Olean, David Howard of Rochester, !GiGi (Matthew) Cerio of Syracuse, Jason (Amy) Gagliardo of Elmira, Angelia Gagliardo of Ft. Myers, FL, Kathleen Cooley of Oklahoma City, OK, Brian Cooley of Lancaster, PA, Christopher Cooley of Los Angeles, CA, Kelly Cooley of Panama City, FL and Michael Cooley of Portville; 6 great grandchildren Alex Curtin, Brianna Curtin, Anthony Cerio, Benjamin Cerio, Elizabeth Cerio and Asher Gagliardo; one brother Edward (Marilyn) Rhow of Springville and several nieces and nephews, especially Betty (Don) Burns of Cheektowaga.
She was predeceased by 1 sister Elizabeth Rhow and 6 brothers Max Rhow, Frank Rhow, Harry Rhow, Carl Rhow, Martin Rhow and Ted Rhow.
There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be celebrated Saturday (October 23, 2004) at 12:30pm in St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, Cuba, NY. Memorials may be made to Friends of The Pines Rte 16 Machias, NY 14101.
