William L. Smith "beloved husband, father, grandfather Allegany, NY-- William L. Smith of 66 N. Fourth St. died Friday (October 29, 2004) in the Olean General Hospital after being admitted a day earlier. Born April 26, 1914 in Allegany he was the son of Ralph and Nita Smith. On July 18, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegany he married Evelyn P. "Evy" Putt. He and his wife had celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to her death October 27, 2002. Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Allegany and had attended Allegany schools. He worked for a while on a bakery wagon and later worked for Dresser Clark, retiring in 1979 after 38 years of employment. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and worked on its finance committee. He enjoyed traveling, and he and his wife spent twenty two years of winter retirement in Florida. Surviving are two sons Marv (Donna) Smith and Tom (Kay) Smith, both of Allegany; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters Dorothy Zier of Buffalo and June Uebelhoer of Redding, CA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by two brothers Douglas Smith and Marvin Smith and one sister Jane Smith. Friends will be received on Monday (November 1, 2004) at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegany from 9:30am until 11:00am at which time a funeral service will be held. Rev. Gerald leFeber, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church N. Fourth St. Allegany, NY 14706. Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
