Obituary of Barbara "Barby" Ried

Barbara B. ‘Barby’ Ried Allegany, NY Barbara Ried passed away peacefully on June 24,2016 at her home. Born October 7, 1955 in Olean, she was the daughter of Charles and Bernadette Glass Ried. Barby was born with Down syndrome. Her birth, along with others born in the mid-1950s, led to her parents and others joining together to provide educational and social opportunities for their children. Their efforts resulted in the development of the Cattaraugus County ReHabilitation Center. She worked at SubCon Industries for many years, always proud that she earned a paycheck. Barby took pride in participating in Special Olympics and all the social functions provided by the ReHabilitation Center and her family. She attended Harvest Field Ministries in Olean. A much loved daughter, sister and aunt, she is survived by her brother and guardian, James (Juanita) Ried of Allegany; sisters Sandra (Sam Swan) Ried of Albany, Calif., Joan (Doug) Martin of Monument, Colo., Kathy (Rohn Brown) Ried of Denver, Colo., Peg (Dana) Frederic of Pinole Calif. and Betsy Ried (John Hibbard) of Aurora, Colo. and brothers David (Ann) Ried of Olean, Greg (Rhonda) Ried of Buffalo and Dr. Christopher (Johnny Torigoe) Ried of West Hollywood, Calif. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews; Rachel, Emma, Colette, Aaron, Abby, Ben, Dan, Matt, Eric, Lauren, Julie, Andy, Christopher, Ryan and Amber, along with many great-nieces and nephews, and special friends Margey Henkel and David Derx. The caring and dedicated staff of the ReHabilitation Center are considered her friends and the family expresses their gratitude for all that they did for Barby during her lifetime. She was predeceased by her parents and grandparents. Friends will be received from 5-7pm Monday at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A prayer service will be held Tuesday (June 28, 2016) at 9am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am at St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Private spiritual words of comfort and music for Barby's ReHabilitation Center "family" will be offered by Pastors Doug and Maggie Travis of Harvest Field Ministries Monday at 3:30pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Abigail V. Dulmus Endowed Fund in care of the ReHabilitation Foundation, 1439 Buffalo Road, Olean NY, 14760. Abby’s fund provides holiday parties to clients of the ReHabilitation Center, which Barby always enjoyed to the fullest.
