Please accept my sincere condolences. I just found out by chance through Carolyn Hemphill. I went to school with Rick. My sister Kassie and I often played with Rick and Sally Jo. I must confess I did not really know Rick as an adult, but reading of his passing, I started to remember the times we shared as children. I cannot begin to ease your sorrow, but I know that as long as he was loved he will be remembered

There are no words I can think of that will be of comfort to Rick's family at the moment, but I would like to tell you how long I have known him and the impression he made on me. When I first started teaching at what was then Allegany Central School, Rick and his family lived next to me on North 5th Street. Although Rick's family was wonderful, they certainly didn't have it easy.
When I began teaching, one of my closest friends was Rick's aunt, Mary Havers, with whom I had also attended St. Bonaventure. Mary and Rick's mom were sisters.
Flash forward several years to when Rick married and became the Mayor of Allegany. That little village could not have asked for a better mayor as Rick was always attentive to what was going on and who needed some kind of services for which he could arrange.
Rick and his wife, Elaine, had two children, one of whom, their daughter, Erica, passed away about a year ago and, although her loss was deeply felt by her parents and brother, Rick continued to carry on his duties to the town to which he was so dedicated.
Rick was one of the kindest, most dedicated, and most caring individuals whom I have ever met. It seems like he was always looking out for someone else, in addition to taking beautiful care of his family. Allegany became a stronger, more decent town during his years of service to his community and it was always possible to see his hand in anything that was positive and good. To say that he will be missed is putting it mildly.
I can only hope that, as time passes, his wife, his son, and his extended family will take comfort in the fact that he was so highly thought of and treasured and, while Elaine is taking care of Ryan here, Rick will be looking after Erica, whom I am sure was delighted to see him once again.
My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and son, as well as anyone who knew and cared about Rick. He will, indeed, be missed by everyone with whom he came in contact.

If people would aspire to be like Rick, what a wonderful place this world would be. Caring, compassionate, smart , funny. Always more concerned about you than himself. Ready to lend a hand, an ear, a pat on the back, a laugh. His family and friends meant the world to him. He never knew a stranger. The world is a better place because Rick was in it. Let's all honor his memory and be as kind, caring and compassionate as he was, everyday of his life. Sleep sweetly, Rick. You are loved and missed. Elaine and Ryan - our hearts are with you.

Elaine and Ryan,
I'm sure that you knew without all of us telling you what a treasure Rick is. We all can learn a lot about how to be a better person from Rick's examples. A more selfless person is so hard to find. And on top of that, he was a fun guy to be around.
I can see Rick and Erica taking the role of Clarence the angel and his little helper showing up where needed.
Godspeed to all of you, you are all loved.

Elaine, Ryan and Family,
My deepest sympathy to you all. No words can express what a great guy Rick was. He was always such a caring person.....someone you always enjoyed running into because he always had a smile on his face. Even after he was diagnosed with cancer his first question to me was "How are you feeling?" Always putting someone else first. He will be missed by so many. My only consolation is that he is now dancing with Erica in heaven. God's speed, Rick!
