Phyllis J. Whitmer
Olean, NY-- Phyllis J. Whitmer, a longtime resident of the South Nine Mile Road in Allegany died Saturday (November 6, 2004) in The Pines of Olean where she had resided for the past several years.
Born January 9, 1925 in Clarksburg, W. VA she was the daughter of Glen E. and Ella Stark Newman. On December 29, 1946 in Olean, NY she married Leo A. Whitmer, Jr. who predeceased her August 18, 2001.
Mrs. Whitmer was a 1943 graduate of Olean High School and a 1946 graduate of WCA Hospital School of Nursing in Jamestown, NY. She had been employed for many years as a surgical nurse at the former St. Francis Hospital in Olean prior to her retirement in 1974.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Olean and had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for several years. She enjoyed playing cards and had been an avid roller skater. She was looking forward to the upcoming birth of her newest great granddaughter.
Surviving are three daughters Kathleen (Steve) Curran of Nixa, MO, Leslie (Michael) Riehle of Allegany and Sandra (Timothy) Dohl of Falconer; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law Marie Smith Brown of Olean and Dorothy Whitmer of Buffalo.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a daughter Linda Tyler and a granddaughter Kimberly Tyler, both in 1974.
Friends will be received today from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Monday (November 8, 2004) at noon in the First Baptist Church, Olean. Rev. Alexandra Freer, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Friends of the Pines 2245 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760.
