Gregory P. Pavone
"Loving husband, father, grandfather"
Allegany, NY-Gregory P. Pavone, 85, of 111 Clarence St. died Wednesday (April 1, 2009) at the Olean General Hospital after a short illness.
Born July 11, 1923 in Olean, NY he was the son of Michael and Carmella Zinganni Pavone. On July 17, 1954 at St. John's Church in Olean he married Carol A. Napolione who predeceased him June 1, 1999.
Mr. Pavone was a 1941 graduate of Olean High School. He enlisted in the US Army where he served as a sergeant during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He then graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. He had been employed by Dresser Clark Co. from 1951 until February 28, 1986 where he retired as the purchasing agent. In recent years he enjoyed working as the manager of the St. Bonaventure Golf Course Caddy Shack.
He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Allegany Knights of Columbus Council 1220 and the American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 of Allegany. He served as the president of the St. Bonaventure Parochial School Home School Association. He also enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren. He was actively devoted to exercise and was recently recognized with the "Silver Sneakers" award by Independent Health for his regimen of golf in the summer and indoor workouts at the Olean YMCA.
Surviving are 1 son Greg B. (Robin) Pavone of Bradford, PA; 1 daughter Sharon (Barry) Horgan of Rochester Hills, MI; 4 grandchildren Michael Horgan, Sean Horgan, Nikki Pavone and Megan Pavone; 1 sister Viola Edel of Buffalo and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday (April 4, 2009) beginning with a prayer service at 9:00am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the chaplain and commander of the Allegany American Legion.
