"Loving father and grandfather"
Olean, NY-Dr. Leslie Badanes of 132 N. 7th St. died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in McKean County in Pennsylvania.
Born May 29, 1941 in Manhattan, NY he was the son of Meyer and Celia Greenspan Badanes.
Dr. Badanes was raised and educated in Freehold, NJ and earned a BA in German Studies at Rutgers University in Brunswick, NJ. He then received his MA and PhD in German Languages and Literature at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He later earned a Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology from St. Bonaventure University.
He had been employed by St. Bonaventure University as an Associate Professor of German from 1968 to 1994. Over the span of his academic training and teaching career he was a German Academic Exchange Fellow, having studied in Freiburg, Germany; was awarded the Delta Phi Alpha Award; was named a Henry Rutgers Scholar; was a Mayne Educational Fund Scholar and was twice awarded as a Fulbright Scholar. He also authored and delivered numerous papers in German Language and Literature. He was a passionate history lover, enjoyed traveling and had been active in performing with the Olean Community Theater. He most enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends.
Surviving are 2 children Kevin (Lara) Badanes of Durham, NC and Jennifer (George) Nasuta of Olean; 1 granddaughter Taryn Nasuta; 1 grandson Andrew VanDixon; several cousins and his former spouse Minna Badanes of Olean.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday (March 27, 2009) from 9:30am until 11:00am. A Jewish funeral service will begin at 11:00am in the funeral home. Harry Kazman will lead the service. Burial will be in B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Olean.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
