Michael T. Wenke
Allegany, NY Michael T. Wenke, 64, of Allegany passed away Friday (January 23, 2015) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born August 2, 1950 in Olean he was the son of Loren E. and Marian V. "Chub" Hughes Wenke.
Michael was a 1968 graduate of Olean High School. He enlisted in the US Navy where he served during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1972. After his military service he worked as an auto mechanic in California for several years. Later he was a service technician for Verizon for close to thirty years in the Santa Barbara and Lompoc, California areas. He retired and moved back to this area in 2006.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the American Legion and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding his motorcycle and working on cars, reading and doing daily crossword puzzles. He loved his black Labrador named "Sap" who was his faithful and loyal pet.
Surviving are a sister Denise (Kenneth) Morgan of Anacortes, WA; two brothers Peter (Mary) Wenke and Gary (Denise) Wenke, both of Olean; 1 niece and 5 nephews; Chad Wenke, Keri W. Comstock, Bryan Morgan, Aaron Morgan, Kyle Wenke and Alex Wenke and many loving cousins.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State St. Olean. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (January 28, 2015) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church Renovation Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
