Obituary of Margaret Bergreen

Margaret L. "Peg" Bergreen Olean, NY Margaret L. "Peg" Bergreen, a resident of 1855 Windfall Road, Olean, NY and a recent resident of Eden Heights, in Olean since December 2013, passed away peacefully Tuesday (September 9, 2014) at the Olean General Hospital surrounded by family. She was born May 9, 1924 in Buffalo, NY and was the daughter of Charles and Margaret Hansen Hunter. On October 14, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Olean she married Donald M. Bergreen, who survives. Peg was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1942. She graduated from the College of Wooster (Ohio) in 1946 receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Philosophy. She worked in the family insurance business and served as secretary of the Hunter Agency, Inc. in Olean. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Olean and served as an Elder, Deacon and Sunday school teacher. From 1978 to 1982 she served on the church Task Force for rebuilding the church following the fire in 1978. She was a member of the Olean General Hospital Board for 18 years, and served as Secretary. She was also a member and volunteer of the Hospital Auxiliary and served as President from 1970 to 1972. She was a group leader, and a board member of the Olean Area Campfire Council. She was a life member of the P.T.A., and a former President of the Olean Junior High School Parent Teacher Association. She was a lifelong member of the Bartlett Country Club and was a member of the former Civic Music Association. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, traditional rug hooking, gardening, reading… and friends. Peg was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a compassionate caregiver who was kind and generous. She was highly creative and artistically talented. She was community focused and civic minded. She had countless friendships that spanned many decades. Surviving family members include her husband of 63 years, Don; two daughters, Betsy Bergreen (Douglas) Price of Olean and Polly Bergreen (Duncan) Pyle of North Andover, MA; four grandchildren, Randall (Katie) Price, Kristie (Tim) Lindhome, Margaret MacMurray Pyle (and her fiancé Laert Rusha) and Thomas Hunter Pyle; five great grandchildren, and her sister Hope (Robert) Black of Bedford, NY and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday (September 13, 2014) from 9:30 until 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Olean, 212 Laurens St. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 am at the church. Dr. Anthony L. Evans will officiate in the absence of Bruce Levine, pastor. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 212 Laurens St., the Olean General Hospital, 515 Main St., Homecare and Hospice, 1225 W. State St., all in Olean, NY 14760.
