Theresa L. Cooney "devout Christian" Olean, NY-- Theresa L. Cooney of 1861 Willard St. died Thursday (January 16, 2003) in the Olean General Hospital after a short illness. Born June 30, 1926 in Salamanca she was the daughter of Michael and Clara Biss Poydock. On August 5, 1950 in St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca she married Thomas B. Cooney who survives. Mrs. Cooney attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School and was a 1944 graduate of Salamanca High School. She first worked for Norton’s Store in Salamanca during WWII, later moving to her current home on Willard St. in 1950. She was then employed for the former W. T. Grant Co. and later for J.C. Penny Co. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and also the Catholic Daughters of America. She will be remembered for her love of her grandchildren and for her devotion to praying the rosary. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing roses and she also enjoyed arts and crafts. Surviving besides her husband are 5 children Thomas Michael (Lorrie) Cooney of Spring, Tx, Kathleen C. (Frank) Dougherty and Anne L. Cooney, both of Rochester, Mary H. (David) Reynolds of Little Valley and James P. Cooney of Henderson, NJ; 12 grandchildren Jeffrey and Jill Cooney, Katie, Matt, Nate and Molly Dougherty, Andrew, Brett and Katie Reynolds and Kevin, Brian, and Julie Cooney; 1 brother Robert Poydock of Perry; 2 sisters Mary (Bill) Tracy of Concord, Ca and Barbara (Gerald) Fordham of Salamanca, several nieces and nephews and a loving former daughter-in-law Cathy Manion Cooney and Cathy’s niece Erica Manion. She was predeceased by 1 sister Sr. Marcella Poydock, OLVM in 2001. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean where a prayer service will be held Monday (January 20, 2003) at 10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or to the Walsh Foundation 208 N. 24th St. Olean, NY 14760.
