Obituary of Bernice Underwood

Bernice B. "Betty" Underwood Olean, NY Bernice B. "Betty" Underwood of 115 West Street died Thursday (November 10, 2011) in the Olean General Hospital following a short illness. Born November 21, 1926 in Olean she was the daughter of Raymond and Pearl Shay Luzier. On January 22, 1944 in Olean she married Donald Jay Underwood who predeceased her on January 30, 2010. They had been married for 66 years. Mrs. Underwood was a lifelong resident of Olean and had worked as a cook for St. Bonaventure University. She retired as a crossing guard in Olean. She enjoyed attending the Olean Senior Center's ECHO program for many years. She also cherished the friendship with her sweet little dog "Sugar". Surviving are two children Frederick Underwood of Inverness, FL and Debora Thomson of Limestone; three grandchildren Michelle (Andrew) Mehler, Michael (Sherry) Underwood and Brian (Angie) Underwood; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by three brothers Raymond Luzier, Donald Luzier and Joseph Luzier and two sisters Anna Kelly and Esther Roberts. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (November 14, 2011) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Frank Hayman will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
