Pottstown, PA-- William A. "Buck" Duffy of Pottstown, PA, died Monday (April 4, 2011).
Born in South Philadelphia PA, on May 11, 1931 he was the son of the late William A. and Margaret C. Wilson Duffy. He married Carol Brahaney who survives.
Mr. Duffy was educated at St. Anthony of Padua School in South Philadelphia. He studied for the Franciscan priesthood at St. Josephs' Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, NY and St. Bonaventure University, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degree. After leaving the Franciscan order two years before ordination, he returned to Philadelphia to teach at St. John Neumann High School. Two years later, he accepted an administration position at St. Bonaventure University and three years later he accepted an administration position at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He spent 27 years in guidance for the Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, VA. Upon retirement he worked as a sexton at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Annandale, VA. And worked in Fairfax County Public Schools in Records Management office. He and wife wife retired to Pottstown, PA in 2003.
He was a founding member and first chairman of Catholic College Coordinating Counsel. For ten years he served on the Board of Overseers at St. Joseph's College in North Windham, Maine. Mr. Duffy served on the first School Board of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia and a s president of the Northern Virginia Catholic Parents and Teachers Association.
Surviving besides his wife of forty-nine years are five children Brian J., of Toledo, Ohio, Kevin J., of Alexandria, VA., Margaret M. (Daniel) of Nolensville, TN, Dennis P. (Julianne), of Shamong, NJ, and Caroline E., of Catonsville, MD; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters Sister Mary Fabian Duffy, I.H.M., and Margaret (Pat) Morrow, and brothers Thomas J., Joseph A. and John A. Duffy.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road on Saturday (April 9, 2011) from 11-1pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bonaventure Church at 1pm. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
