Alan R. Chambers
"Loving father, brother and uncle"
Ischua, NY Alan R. Chambers of 4946 Hardscrabble Rd. passed away Friday (April 1, 2011) in the Olean General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born May 31, 1948 in Olean, NY he was the son of Ralph R. and Leora M. Lockwood Chambers. On July 8, 1972 he wed Nancy Pettit to whom he was married twenty five years.
Mr. Chambers was a 1966 graduate of Hinsdale Central School and later attended the University at Buffalo and St. Bonaventure University. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army where he honorably served from 1968 until 1972. He was assigned to the Army Security Agency- Military Intelligence Unit and during his service from May 1970 until April 1971 was a Vietnamese linguist in Vietnam. He then served in Washington, DC until his discharge in 1972.
He had been employed for several years for Tremco Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio as a national roofing salesman and then in that same capacity for Dunlap Rubber Co. in Phoenix, Arizona from 1986 to 1998. Upon returning to Hinsdale in 1998 he worked for Team Chevrolet for four years.
Mr. Chambers had been serving as the Ischua Town Supervisor for the past two years. He was active as a past Cattaraugus County Commander of the American Legion and was a very active member and past Commander of the Hinsdale American Legion Post #1434. He enjoyed his involvement with the town of Ischua and the Hinsdale American Legion and he also enjoyed fishing and quickly solving the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. He had a lighthearted sense of humor which he shared with all his friends and family and for the younger children he gave them his attention by "picking on them".
Surviving are two daughters Katherine (Donald) Busse of Lancaster and Lynn (Robert) Powley of Yuma, AZ; two grandsons Tiernan Powley and Donald Busse; two sisters Marilyn (Vernon) Clayson of Las Vegas, NV and Sandra Brooks of Hinsdale and several nieces and nephews. He especially loved his dog "Bear Doggy".
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (April 5, 2011) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Leslie E. Chambers, pastor of the West Clarksville Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Hinsdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hinsdale American Legion or to the Ischua Volunteer Fire Department.
