Samuel P. "Sam" Russell
Haskell, OK Samuel P. "Sam" Russell, a former resident of Hinsdale, passed away peacefully Saturday (February 12, 2011) in the Muskogee Regional Medical Center in Oklahoma.
Born September 19, 1935 in Scio, NY he was the son of Guy John and Sarah Belle Miller Russell. On November 24, 1956 at the Cuba Methodist Church he married Genevieve Bishop who survives.
Mr. Russell was a veteran of the Korean War having served with the US Army from 1953 until 1955. Over the span of 41 years he had been employed as a service representative for Dresser Rand Co., retiring in 1999.
He had resided in Bixby from 1970 until 1986 and in Haskell for the past 25 years and was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Bixby. He was a lifetime member of the Hinsdale American Legion Post #1434 and was a member and former fire chief of the Hinsdale Fire Department. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, especially loved animals including dogs and cats, and enjoyed the companionship of his dog Sophie.
Surviving besides his wife of 54 years are three brothers James Russell of Brimfield, IL, John Russell of Caneadea, NY and Glen Russell of Franklinville; three sisters Joanna Stone of Del Rio, TX, and twin sisters Jane Bailey of Randolph and Janet Scott of Del Rio, TX; a brother-in-law Monroe Bishop of Hinsdale; two sisters-in-law Hazel Dutton and Rose Hamilton, both of Hinsdale and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers Harold Russell, Clyde Russell and Fred Russell and two sisters Mary Chambers and Evelyn Warner.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 3 until 5pm. Funeral services will follow at 5pm at the funeral home with Rev. Leslie E. Chambers, pastor of the West Clarksville Baptist Church and a nephew to Mr. Russell, to officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
Following the funeral service, members of the Hinsdale American Legion will conduct a military service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hinsdale American Legion or to the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department.
