Melvin Hamilton
Allegany, NY Melvin Hamilton of 3897 Old State Rd. died peacefully Wednesday (November 17, 2010) in The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Olean.
Born February 6, 1927 in Allegany he was the son of Lyle D. and Oneta Burr Hamilton. On July 12, 1960 at the former First Methodist Church in Olean he married Vivian M. Washburn who survives.
Mr. Hamilton was a 1943 graduate of Allegany High School and began working for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. He then enlisted in the US Army where he served during WWII from 1945 to 1946. He continued working for the railroad, later Conrail, where he retired in 1982 after 44 years of employment. He had been a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Union.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming, where along with his wife he actively farmed in Allegany for many years.
Surviving besides his wife are 2 daughters Cheryl (Richard) Collins of Allegany and Christine A. (Thomas) Moshier of Matthews, NC; 1 stepdaughter Dianna (James) Connelly of Allegany; 1 stepson Daniel (Vicki) Jenkins of Weston's Mills; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law Flora Hamilton of Allegany and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by 1 brother LaVere Hamilton in December 1993 and 2 great grandsons Brent Austin on February 28, 2001 and Marshall Collins on November 5, 1994.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday (November 18, 2010) from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at which time funeral and committal services will be held. Rev. Brad Chesebro, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate followed by full military services conducted by members of the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Allegany Fire Department.
