Bernard D. Elling
Olean, NY -- Bernard D. Elling of 126 E. Greene Street died Tuesday (April 20, 2010) in the Olean General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 4, 1919 in Hinsdale, NY he was the son of Fred and Annis Beckwith Elling. On July 6, 1941 in Olean he married Meranda O. Johnson who survives. They celebrated 68 years of marriage.
Mr. Elling attended Hinsdale Central School and first worked for the Ford Motor Company in Buffalo for several years. He returned to Hinsdale to help his father on the dairy farm which he later owned and farmed. Upon his retirement in 1973 he and his wife moved to Olean.
He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Olean. He was a longtime member of and past Master of both the Hinsdale Grange and later the Cuba Grange. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball as well as bowling, hunting and fishing. He also liked doing puzzles.
Surviving besides his wife are 3 children Gary (Ann) Elling of Rochester, Donald (Betty) Elling of Hinsdale and Nancy (Jim) Wade of Little Rock, Arkansas; 8 grandchildren Fred, Judy, Jerry, Karen, Benjamin, Andrew, Sarah and Audra; 8 great grandchildren Brooks, Evan, Meranda, Joshua, Trent, Maitlyn, Sarah and Jennifer and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and 1 brother.
A memorial service will be held Friday (April 23, 2010) at 2:00pm at the Hinsdale United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends from 1pm until 2pm. Rev. Dr. Carl Schultz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Hinsdale Cemetery in Maplehurst. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church 1706 Lincoln Ave. Olean, NY 14760 or to the Hinsdale United Methodist Church Main St. Hinsdale, NY 14743.
