John R. Brewer, Sr.
Olean, NY-John R. Brewer, Sr. of Olean passed away Saturday (March 20, 2010) at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 6, 1931 in Layton, PA he was the son of the late William and Lucille Brewer. On March 15, 1952 in Salamanca, NY he married Jean C. Grandusky who predeceased him on January 24, 1997.
Mr. Brewer graduated from Perry Township High School in 1949, and then went to work for Railway Baldest Conditioning Corp. in Minneapolis, Minn. from 1949 to 1956.
A veteran of the Korean War where he spent 13 months in Korea, Mr. Brewer served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He attained the rank of Sergeant and worked as a tank mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1954 having received the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
In 1956 he went to work for AT&T (now Verizon), rising to the position of supervisor before his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion, American AARP, and for more than 40 years he was a member of the American Bowling Congress. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are 2 sons John (Kathleen) Brewer and Timothy Brewer, both of Olean; 4 grandchildren Jennifer, Timothy, Michae1and Kristen Brewer; 3 great grandchildren; 1 sister Katherine (Kenneth) Livengood of Somerset, PA; 2 brothers Albert (Nancy) Brewer of Columbus, GA and William Brewer of Belle Vernon, PA; 1 brother-in-law Ralph Gardener of McKeesport, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 1 sister Gladys Gardner and a sister-in-law Ester Brewer.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (March 24, 2010) at 10:00am in the funeral home. Brother Chris Coccia, O.F.M. of St. Bonaventure Friary, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer society or to Homecare and Hospice 1225 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760.
