Joan Marie Anderson
Tierra Verde, Fl-- Joan Marie Anderson, a long time Hinsdale and Olean resident, most recently of Harwich Port, MA and Tierra Verde, Fl, passed away Thursday (February 18, 2010) at the Bay Front Medical Center in St. Petersburg Florida.
Born March 7, 1921 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of John and Georgina Kennedy Hagerty. On February 26, 1944, she married Joseph E. Anderson, MD, who predeceased her October 20, 2000.
Mrs. Anderson was a 1938 graduate of Holy Angels Academy of Buffalo and attended the State Teachers College of Buffalo (now Buffalo State).
She was a devout Catholic and an honorary member of the First Order of St. Francis and was the Lady Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. She was a long time choir director at St. Joseph's Maronite Catholic Church in Olean and St.Helen's Mission Church in Hinsdale. She was a singer and a poet who particularly loved the opera, gourmet food and cooking, crossword puzzles and antiques. She was active politically and was one of the founders of the Walsh Foundation as well as in the 1960's was chairwoman of the nascent Conservative Party in Cattaraugus County.
Surviving are her 7 sons Mark (Maria) Anderson of Clinton, NY, Hugh (Marcy) Anderson of Marshfield MA, Joseph (Joanie) Anderson, Jr. of Harwich Port, MA, Timothy (Carol) Anderson of Salamanca, Michael (Monica) Anderson of Berwyn, PA, Christopher (Anne) Anderson of Liverpool, NY, Daniel (Geraldine) Anderson of Hickory, NC; 4 daughters Moira Anderson of Olean, Patricia (Dennis) Campbell of Dover, NH, Bernadette (Marilee McNeill) Anderson of Westerloo, NY, Angela Anderson of Harwich Port, MA; 1 brother Jack Hagerty of Springville, NY; 1 sister Margaret Pierce of New Canaan, CT; 27 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by an infant son and a grandchild Quinn Teresa.
Visitation will be Thursday (February 25, 2010) from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the St. Bonaventure University Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday (February 26, 2010) at 11:00am in the Chapel. Fr. James Vacco, OFM will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
