Rev. Paul E. Cauvel
Derrick City, PA Rev. Paul E. Cauvel, 94, of 195 Fullerton Rd., passed away Friday (January 8, 2021) at the Bradford Ecumenical Home, Bradford, PA, where he had been residing since October 2020.
Born February 22, 1926 in Franklin, PA, he was the son of Lawrence and Marion Kockler Cauvel. On September 4, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church in Romulus, NY he married Alice Dildine who predeceased him June 13, 2019.
Paul was a 1943 graduate of Otto High School. In May of 1944 he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII and served aboard the USS St. Mary as well as the USS James C. Owens. He was aboard ship in Tokyo Harbor the day that Japan surrendered, and was honorably discharged in May of 1946.
He continued his schooling after his marriage and military service and graduated, along with his wife Alice, from Houghton College in 1950. He later graduated from the Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland with a bachelor of sacred theology.
He began a 38-year career as a full time, ordained minister, having served churches in parts of Pennsylvania, the Rochester area, and Western New York. Following retirement, he enjoyed another 15 years at Christ United Methodist Church in Olean as a part-time visitation minister, ably assisted by his wife Alice.
He and his wife were devoted to one another, to raising their six children, and to the communities and congregations in which they lived and served. He enjoyed membership in the Lions Club, and while in the Olean area, was an active Rotarian. The Rotary Club honored both he and his wife with the Paul Harris Award. In the Rochester area, he was recognized as an effective member of the school board for the Gananda School system.
Paul is survived by 2 sons David (Heidi) Cauvel of Bradford, PA and John (Nancy) Cauvel of Pittsford; 3 daughters Barbara (Greg) Crispell of Derby, Dorothy Cauvel of Bradford, PA and Donna (Steve) Teuscher of Portville; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister Jennie Blumenthal of Olean; a sister-in-law Joan Cauvel of Derrick City, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son Daniel Cauvel in 2002; a grandson Jonathan Teuscher in 1999; 2 brothers Glen Cauvel (wife Marilyn) and Larry Cauvel; a sister Barbara Meserole (husband Paul) and a brother-in-law Paul Dildine (wife Marcia).
Due to restrictions on gathering, the family will have a private funeral service on Tuesday (January 12, 2021) at 11am in Christ United Methodist Church in Olean. All are welcome to watch via live stream at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMhjyo5RCbJbCZqbEZWG2Tw. Log in a few moments before 11am. Full military honors will begin the ceremony at 11am, accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. The funeral service will follow, with Rev. Chad Sayers, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Suzanne Block, former pastor, and a niece to Paul, Rev. Paula Grucza. Burial will follow in McKean Memorial Park, Lafeyette, PA.
