Obituary of Bessie J. Armstrong

Bessie J. Armstrong Olean, NY Bessie J. Armstrong, 89, a longtime resident of Olean, passed away Thursday (November 9, 2023) at the Heritage Green Nursing Home in Greenhurst where she had been residing since 2019. Born December 19, 1933 in Bolivar, she was the daughter of Walter and Viola Hinman. On April 29, 1956 at the former First Methodist Church at the corner of N. Union and Hamilton Streets, she married Roland H. Armstrong, Sr. He predeceased her on September 6, 2019. Bessie attended Richburg High School and graduated as valedictorian in 1952. She had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Olean and was a homemaker and an avid bingo player. She also was a Buffalo Bills fan. She is survived by 1 son and 1 daughter, Edward L. Armstrong of Cassadaga and Jane M. Armstrong of Olean; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law Lisa Armstrong of Hinsdale, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to Roland, Sr., she was predeceased by 2 sons Roland Armstrong, Jr., and Larry D. Armstrong; 2 brothers Bernard and Conley; and 2 sisters Arlene and Joyce. Private visitation and funeral services will be held at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Wednesday (November 15, 2023). Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean-Hinsdale Road. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
