Obituary of Mahlon L. Ramarge

Mahlon L. Ramarge Olean, NY Mahlon Leonard Ramarge passed away peacefully at the Pines Rehabilitation Facility on Sunday, (September 27, 2026) surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mahlon was born August 3, 1940, in Emporium, PA to the late William M. and Margaret Ackerd Ramarge. He is survived by his wife Ann Murray Ramarge who he married on June 19, 1965, at St. Mark’s Church in Emporium, PA. Mahlon’s family could always count on him for his steady wisdom and gentle guidance. He will always be remembered as a man devoted to his faith, family and the education of others both in the classroom and in athletics. Mahlon would say his greatest achievement was his loving wife, six children and fifteen grandchildren. Whether it was searching for a Catholic Church on vacation for Easter Sunday mass, providing for an annual vacation for his extended family, or ensuring that all his children could attend the college of their choice, he showed his love in meaningful ways. His grandchildren remember his patience in teaching them to play sports and their cherished memories at Jellystone. Mahlon was a 1958 graduate of Cameron County High School where he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in basketball and baseball. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1962 from St. Bonaventure University. While attending Bonas, he played in the University band and first base for the baseball team. In 1968, he received a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from University of Notre Dame through a prestigious National Science Foundation grant. He was exceptionally proud of both of his alma maters and ensured that the majority of his family was able to see a St. Bonaventure basketball game and a Notre Dame football game. He was a beloved teacher and coach for forty four years at Hinsdale Central School and he joked that he had over one hundred years of coaching experience when counting all four seasons and various levels and sports. He inspired multiple generations of youth to reach their highest potential. Countless students and players have come back to tell him and his family how important he was in their development and thanked him for his wisdom and commitment. Additionally, he was an adjunct professor of mathematics at St. Bonaventure University and Jamestown Community College as well as a summer schoolteacher for the Olean City School District. He was a longtime member of Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and taught religious education classes. As a youth, he was an altar server at St. Mark’s Church in Emporium. In Hinsdale he helped establish the Little League program. Professionally, he was an active member and served as an officer for the local, state and national levels of the National Education Association. During his service, he was afforded the opportunity to travel to several destinations with his wife. Mahlon is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ann; 6 children Kathleen (Steve) Morien of Chesapeake, VA; Michael (Kim) Ramarge and Kristine (Tim) Ring, both of Olean; Karen (Tom) Orcutt of East Greenbush; Matthew (Alison) Ramarge of Mt. Juliet, TN; and Kimberly (Robert) Buchanan of Olean; 15 grandchildren Kyle and Kara Morien; Alyssa and Brian Ramarge; Austin, Mary, Byron and Grace Ring; Nicole, Ryan and Andrew Orcutt; Matthew and Calen Ramarge; and Allie and Madelyn Buchanan; and a nephew Jim Narby. He is predeceased by his sisters Sharon Narby and Frances Ramarge and a niece LuAnn Narby Reed all of Emporium, PA. Friends will be received from 4-7pm on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 10am.
