Kevin L. Curran
Allegany, NY Kevin L. Curran, 67, of 18 Pine St., passed away Thursday (February 18, 2021) at the Olean General Hospital, with his two daughters by his side.
Born January 10, 1954 in Cuba, he was the son of Donald and Esther Wingert Curran. In May 1975 he married his high school sweetheart Judith A. "Judy" Curran who predeceased him November 23, 2014.
Kevin was a 1972 graduate of Allegany High School and attended Lockhaven State College, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He received his master of education in Administration in 1999 from St. Bonaventure University.
In 1980 he began what became a continuous career with Portville Central School, first as a teacher and coach, and later as an athletic director and principal. Kevin was one of the most winning coaches in PCS. He was an assistant football coach his first year at Portville before taking the head football coaching position in 1981, a position he held until 1991. He was also the girl's varsity basketball coach from 1980 to 1983 and the boy's varsity track coach from 1984 to 1987. He served as Athletic Director for 11 years, and also served as the Cattaraugus County track chairman, the Section 6 Divisional Football Chairman, and helped in the creation of the Expressway Conference. From 2004 until his retirement in 2010, he was the school's principal. In 2015, Kevin was inducted into the Portville Central School Hall of Fame. Even after retirement, he was always the champion of all students and faculty in his unrelenting devotion to the Portville Central School community.
In his retirement, Kevin enjoyed traveling, volunteering, cooking, and spending time with family.
Surviving are 2 daughters Kaitlin (John) Speta of Waterford and Kristin (Lucas) Flachs of Stamford; 1 granddaughter Lydia Flachs; 2 grandsons Wyatt Flachs and Jack Speta; a loving companion Nancy Crawford of Allegany; 2 brothers Joseph (Ellen) Curran of Pompano Beach, FL and Steven (Kathy) Curran of Gastonia, NC; a sister-in-law Jan Howard of Allegany and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, his parents and a brother-in-law Fred Howard.
A memorial visitation will take place on Sunday from 3-6pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday (February 22, 2021) at 10am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
