Olean- Virginia L. Berezney, 90, formerly of Manchester Township, N.J., and Olean, died Thursday (July 14, 2016) at the Cuba Memorial Hospital. Born April 10, 1926 in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of Matthew and Wilhelmina (Boerner) Popp. She married Peter J. Berezney, who predeceased her on October 13, 2008. Virginia attended William Dickinson High School in Jersey City and studied classical piano; giving a recital at Town Hall in New York City at the age of 14. Although she chose not to pursue a concert career, Virginia continued to play piano and organ for church services, social gatherings, and the enjoyment of her family and friends. For many years, Virginia was the purchasing manager for Tom Fields Ltd., a division of MEM Company in Northvale, N.J. In 2007, she and her late husband, Peter, moved to Eden Heights in Olean. Surviving are her daughter Leigh (Ed) Simone, of Olean; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Hawaii. Private interment services will be held in New Jersey. Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
