Richard B. Jakes Allegany, NY Richard B. Jakes of 74 Harriet St. passed away Friday (August 14, 2015) at the Absolut of Allegany after a long illness. Born October 22, 1932 in Astoria, Queens he was the son of Barney and Martha Muller Jakes. On November 17, 1951 he married Nanna "Ann" Jakes who predeceased him on March 2, 2005. Mr. Jakes had been employed as a Carpenter Superintendent at the headquarters for the NYS Parks Department on Long Island prior to his retirement in 1992. He was a deeply loyal and faithful man and was a former member of the Presbyterian Church on Long Island where he spent many years working with the church's Christian Service Brigade. He was also an elder there for many years. When moving to Colliersville after retirement, he became a lay speaker and took over sermons during the minister's absences. He had a lifelong hobby of woodworking and he loved to carve. His handmade, larger than life rocking horse he made for his grandchildren had been donated to the Village of Allegany and sits in the loft of the new Christmas House for the Christmas in Allegany event. It would have pleased him to know that this treasure had been donated to a very worthy cause that his daughter loves so much. Surviving are his daughter Judy (Christopher) Speckman of Allegany and 3 grandchildren Peter Marciano II, Andrew Marciano and Emily Speckman. His burial will take place on Friday (August 28, 2015) at the Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association PO Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011. Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
